Turkey caused an upset against Russia ©Getty ImagesTwo-time defending champions Russia face an uphill battle to qualify for the third round of the International Volleyball Federation Women's World Championship after Turkey came from two sets down in Pool F to beat them 19-25, 25-27, 25-22, 25-22, 15-13 in Modena.

The Russians have now slipped to fourth place in the standings with 10 points, one point behind Serbia who won 25-13, 25-15, 25-20 against Kazakhstan in Verona, while the United States and Brazil remain in first and second position respectively after retaining their undefeated records.

The US comfortably overcame Bulgaria 25-17, 25-19, 25-16 in Modena to move onto 15 points, while the Brazilians beat The Netherlands 23-25, 25-20, 25-16, 25-16 in Verona to end the day a point off the pace.

Despite the disappointing result, Russia still have their fate in their own hands as they face Brazil and Serbia to end the second round.

Meanwhile in Pool E, unbeaten leaders China increased their points tally to 14 after a 25-12, 25-15, 25-15 win over Croatia in Trieste.

In Bari, hosts Italy kept up the pressure by beating Belgium 25-18, 25-22, 25-18, while the Dominican Republic, who currently sit in third spot, came from behind to claim a 23-25, 25-11, 25-21, 25-17 victory over Azerbaijan.

Just three points separate the top three teams with Japan, 23-25, 26-24, 25-19, 16-25, 15-11 winners against Germany in Trieste, a further three points behind on eight.

Tomorrow is a rest day with the second round action continuing on Saturday (October 4).
