The Navy celebrate after claiming their first sitting volleyball gold medal at the Warrior Games ©USA VolleyballThe Navy caused an upset by denying the Marines a fifth straight sitting volleyball gold medal at the Warrior Games in Colorado.

The Marines had claimed every gold in the event since the inaugural Games in 2010, but had to settle for silver this time around after going down 26-24, 20-25, 15-6.

It was a close battle throughout with both sides sharing the first two sets, but the Navy managed to build an early lead in the decider and held on to record their first victory in the event.

"We've been waiting for this - we've always had this butting of heads with the Marines - all in good fun, of course," said Navy Hospital Corpsman 2nd class Jacob Emmott.

"We managed to keep our cool and that's what it boils down to a lot of times in competition.

"You go through everything in training and it works well, but when it's competition time you have to hold it together.

"I think we managed to keep our composure and we had a great game."

In the evening's wheelchair basketball action, the Army beat the Navy 41-24 to advance to the gold-medal game tomorrow against the Marines, while the Navy go home with the bronze medal.

The Army continues to lead the way on the overall medal count after picking up another 29 medals during track and field competition in Colorado.

The Army's haul included 12 gold, while the star of the show was First Lieutenant Kelly Elmlinger, who was the only woman competing in the mixed T53/T54 100 metre, 200m, 400m and 1500m finals and claimed silver medals in all four events.

Sergeant Michael Wishnia of the Marines was another to impress as he claimed gold in the shot put with an effort of 12.49m, while a throw of 40.61m was more than eight metres better than the rest of the field in the discus and saw him pick up his second gold of the day.

Tomorrow is the final day of competition at the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs and will feature shooting during the day and the gold-medal wheelchair basketball game in the evening.
