In a barely quarter-full stadium, Saudi Arabia's Mohammed Abdulaziz, Qatar's Musaab Bala and Bahrain's Abraham Rotich were all disqualified after finishing first, second and third respectively.

Abdulaziz's disqualification came after he was adjudged to have been guilty of obstruction, while the latter two were penalised for lane violations.

The bad news for the podium men was great news for those in fourth, fifth and sixth, as Iraq's Adnan Almntfage, China's Teng Haining, and Qatar's Jamal Hairane moved into first, second and third respectively.

Former Asian Games champion and 2009 world 1500m champion Yusuf Saad Kamel, who switched allegiances from Kenya to Bahrain in 2003, was a non-finisher in the race, meaning only four athletes will receive official times for the event.
