The men's and women's races, which will see a total of 130 of Europe's finest athletes compete, will consist of a 1500 metre swim, 40 kilometre cycle and 10km run.

Triathlon is one of 20 sports featuring on the inaugural European Games programme, with Rio 2016 Olympic qualification places available for the winner of the men's and women's events.

International Triathlon Union (ITU) secretary general Antonio Arimany previously admitted that the issue of pollution had been "a concern" for both the ITU and the European Triathlon Union.

As a  worst-case scenario, it was suggested that a duathlon competition consisting only of cycling and running would be held, meaning the sport would still feature but no longer serve as an Olympic qualifier.

But Pierce O'Callaghan, Baku 2015 director of sport, has given assurances the chosen venue, well-known as a luxurious seaside resort that is popular with both locals and tourists alike, is up to the required standards.

"Triathlon by its nature is an extremely exciting sport and the Bilgah Beach is the perfect location for what will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of the European Games sports programme," he said.

"Recent tests on the water quality were excellent and we are more than confident that the first European Games will see a thrilling race taking place in a spectacular setting."

Marisol Casado, President of ITU, added: "We are very happy that Baku 2015 European Games has now secured this high-profile venue for the event.

"Their determination to secure a location that has the capacity to host high-quality sport as well as the large crowds that are expected to attend was very welcome."

The two days of competition is due to take place on June 13 and 14, with the Games running from June 12 to 28.
