Kim takes the role previously held by Chung Ui-hwa, who stepped down after he was elected as speaker for the National Assembly.

The ex-politician's election came during Gwangju 2015's fifth Congress meeting which saw more than 200 people in attendance, including Yoon Jang-hyun, chairman of the Gwangju 2015 Organising Committee and Cho Young-pyo, chairman of the Gwangju City Council.

"With all of the various experiences from participating in the Government administration, I will put forth great effort into making the Gwangju Universiade a successful event happening right here in the city of Gwangju, a place which feels like home," said Kim, who is originally from Jangseong of the South Jeolla Province and served as chairman of the Board of Audit and Inspection before taking on the role of Prime Minister from 2010 to 2013.

"In order to prepare a seamless event, the Government, the Gwangju city and the citizens must work strenuously together for the 2015 Gwangju Summer Universiade."

Former co-chairman Chung had played an instrumental role in attracting Governmental support for the event and winning the bid for Gwangju as the host city for the 2015 Summer Universiade.

He served as co-chairman of the Organising Committee since its launch in 2010 and will continue to show his support for the Games through his role as honorary chairman.
