Yevheniy Bohodayko has been named the Allianz Best Male Athlete of the Month for August ©Getty ImagesSwimmer Yevheniy Bohodayko of Ukraine has been named the International Paralympic Committee's (IPC) Best Male Athlete of the Month for August after becoming the most decorated competitor at the 2014 IPC Swimming European Championships in Eindhoven.

The 21-year-old, who secured seven gold and two silver medals as Ukraine finished top of the medals table at the event in The Netherlands, received nearly 35 per cent of the vote.

Bohodayko took up swimming in 2004 and won an impressive six medals - one gold, three silver and two bronze - at the 2010 IPC Swimming World Championships, also in Eindhoven.

At the following edition of the sport's flagship tournament in Berlin, Germany, he won eight gold and two silver medals, as well as breaking one world and two European records.

He also claimed two gold and two silver medals at the London Paralympic Games in 2012 despite having faced two major injury setbacks and then won seven medals at the 2013 IPC Swimming World Championships in Montreal, Canada, including three golds.

Ireland's Eoghan Clifford came second in the voting for the Best Male Athlete of the Month title after securing two rainbow jerseys at the Para-Cycling Road World Championships, while third place went to Canadian Zak Madell, who claimed the Most Valuable Player award at the Wheelchair Rugby World Championships in Odense, Denmark, despite his side losing to Australia in the final.

Double 2014 World Equestrian Games gold medallist Lee Pearson of Great Britain, Australia's Daniel Fitzgibbon, who secured his first world title at the IFDS Combined Sailing World Championships, and Finland's Henry Manni, who won four golds at the IPC Athletics European Championships in Swansea, were also nominated for the award.
