Shooters will be targeting World Championship glory and a spot at Rio 2016 during competition in Granada ©Getty ImagesThe International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Championships have got underway with the Opening Ceremony at Teatro del Generalife of the Alhambra in Granada, as competitors get their first opportunity to secure a place at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

More than 2,000 shooters from 94 countries are set to take part in competition at the CEAR de Tiro Olimpico Juan Carlos I in Las Gabias until September 20.

For the first time, the 51st edition of the Championships will crown junior world champions as well, with action in the 15 Olympic shooting events and 39 non-Olympic events.

Speaking at the Opening Ceremony in Granada, ISSF President Olegario Vazquez Raña, said: "The ISSF is sure that participants from all over the world will find the ideal conditions for competing and to enjoy this extraordinary event here in Granada.

"Junior finals are a new feature of our Championships that will increase the popularity of shooting sport worldwide for the new generations."

The last edition of the Championships were held in Munich in 2010 and, with 64 places for Rio 2016 up for grabs, the competition in Spain will be as fierce as ever.

The 15 Olympic disciplines being contested include the men's and women's 50 metre rifle three positions, 10m air rifle and men's 50m rifle prone.

In pistol events, men and women will compete in the 10m air pistol, while there will also be a men's 50m pistol and 25m rapid fire pistol and a women's 25m pistol competition.

In shotgun disciplines, men and women will compete in trap and skeet events, while there will also be a men's double trap competition.

The ISSF relaunched its website in July, which will contain live results, statistics, news and photographs from the Championships.
