Allen, 19, had led after yesterday's opening speed leg at the D'Ornano Stadium in Caen, but he and mount Molly Malone V downed a fence at the penultimate double jump to fall to 14th on the individual standings.

Home favourite Delaveau went round with a clean slate to move into a 0.08 lead over American Beezie Madden on Cortes C, while Sweden's Rolf-Goran Bengtsson on Casall ASK sit third on 0.34 penalty points.

Delaveau was the only one member of the French team to ride a clear round as Penelope Leprevost on board Flora de Mairposa, Simon Delestre and mount Qlassic Bois Margot, and Kevin Staut on board Reveue de Hurtebise HDC all toppled one fence each to see the host nation slip from first to fourth on the team standings.

Madden's efforts helped the US to move up to second overall, aided by a clear run from McLain Ward on Rothchild.

The Netherland's were the biggest movers of the day as they jumped from fifth to first thanks to three clear rounds from Jeroen Dubbeldam on board Zenith SFN, Maikel van der Vleuten on VDL Groep Verdi and Gerco Schroder and his mount Glock's London.

Foot-perfect rounds from Marcus Ehning on Cornado NRW and Daniel Deusser on Cornet D'Amour helped Germany to take over the bronze medal position ahead of the French and Brazil in fifth place.

"The course is more difficult than yesterday but my horse felt good and fit," said Dubbeldam.

"The oxers were extremely wide but Zenith is very good at that.

"I believe in taking time to prepare a horse for this kind of competition.

"I took two years with this horse and it's going well because all the buttons are there."

Elsewhere, the second day of the vaulting competition at the Zenith Arena in the Parc des Expositions, saw Germany take control by a margin of 0.47 marks ahead of Switzerland, while leaders after day one Australia dropped to third.

Britain's Joanne Eccles put in another impressive showing on board WH Bentley to move into the lead of the female individual standings with a score of 8.619 to leave her just 0.075 ahead of overnight leader Rikke Laumann of Denmark and her mount Ghost Alfarvad Z.

Switzerland's Simone Jaiser maintained third position on board Luk.

In the men's competition, Jacques Ferrari and Nicolas Andreani remain in first and second place respectively, with Erik Oese replacing German compatriot Viktor Brusewitz in third.

Ferrari and mount Poivre Vert scored 8.838 in today's test with Andreani on board Just A Kiss HN registering 8.740.
