August 4 - UK Sport is set to lose another key member of staff after its head of communications, Russell Langley, announced he was leaving to take up a similar role at British Cycling.

It follows the resignation of chief executive John Steele, who officially left the organisation last Friday (July 30) to become the head of the Rugby Football Union.

Langley had joined UK Sport in February 2002 as a communications manager.

He took over as head of communications in March 2009 having acting in the role for the previous 18 months.

During his time at UK Sport he has also held the post of head of press for Drug-Free Sport before the formation of the independent UK Anti-Doping was formed.

Langley currently oversees a team of four responsible for all external and internal communication channels, primarily in the areas of media relations, e-communications, publications and branding.

Langley is due to take up his new role in October when, ironically, one of his first jobs could be to deal with the results of a independent review launched by UK Sport in May into the relationship between Britain's new professional squad Team Sky and the country's Olympic squad to ensure that preparations for London 2012 are not compromised.

Langley told insidethegames: "I'm delighted to be joining British Cycling at what is a hugely exciting time for both the organisation and cycling in general.

"From a communications perspective, building on the success of Beijing and capitalising on the run-up to London 2012 provides a unique opportunity to showcase everything that is good about the sport.

"I see my role as helping ensure this opportunity is firmly grasped and I look forward to getting stuck into it.

"I’ve enjoyed more than eight years at UK Sport, during which time it taken high performance sport in this country to a new level.

"Being part of that is something I’ll look back on with much pride, and I wish the team there all the best for the future."

A search for the replacement for Langley is not expected to start until a new chief executive is chosen to replace Steele.

Interviews were held last week with a decision expected shortly.
