The Turkish Olympic Committee has launched its first ever Twitter page ©TOCThe National Olympic Committee of Turkey (NOCT) has announced the launch of its first ever Twitter page with the aim of ensuring a strong connection between fans and the country's athletes competing at the Nanjing 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Games.

The pages are in both Turkish and English and the NOCT promised it will update followers on the journeys and successes of its 42-strong team of athletes taking part in 16 sports at the Games which are due to start with the Opening Ceremony on Saturday (August 16).

"I am delighted to announce the Turkish Olympic Committee's new Twitter pages as we embark on what will be a fantastic trip to Nanjing to support our young athletes," said NOCT President Uğur Erdener.

"I will be there for the duration of the Games and hope to attend many of the events.

"We are very fortunate in Turkey to have a young population and a population which is truly passionate about sport - and I am particularly pleased that this year we have as many female as male athletes competing for our country.

"The Turkish Olympic Committee's desire to launch a presence on social media is a statement about how important we view our young athletes as the future of Turkish sport.

"My best wishes to each athlete competing - you have made us very proud."

Erdener will be attending the Games in Nanjing and, along with the 21 girls and 21 boys representing Turkey, he will be joined by the vice general manager of the General Directory of Sports, Ömer Altunsoy; sports director at the NOCT, Alp Berker; games coordinator at the NOCT, Sezel Tansel; and the team's doctor, Tuğba Kocahan.

Turkey claimed 10 medals at the inaugural Summer Youth Olympic Games in Singapore in 2010 that included one gold for wrestler Resul Kalayci, while the team also secured three silver and six bronze medals.
