She replaces Gordon Arthur, who had been carrying out the role since September 2008, but who is now unavailable due to a personal issue. 

Brock-Doyle, named PR Week's Professional of the Year for 2012 for her work the Olympics and Paralympics, will now play a leading role in shaping the Glasgow 2014 message when the Commonwealth Games start here on Wednesday (July 23).

Brock-Doyle hosted the first media briefing of Glasgow 2014 here today.

"I am covering Gordon Arthur's role as he is currently unable to be here due to family health reasons," Brock-Doyle told insidethegames.

It is the second time Brock-Doyle has been called upon at late notice to head communications for a Commonwealth Games.

At Manchester 2002 she was brought in a few weeks before the start of the Games after the communications director Mike Hales, a former BBC executive, had to leave because of illness in his family.

Following Manchester, Brock-Doyle was one of the original group of people hired to work on London's bid to host the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics.

Having been awarded the Games by the International Olympic Committee in July 2005, she stayed until the successful delivery of the event.

Brock-Doyle, made an Order of the British Empire for her work on London 2012, is now working as chief executive of The Good Relations Group, an award communications agency that is part of Chime.

Following London 2012 she was also drafted in by the IOC to serve on its Coordination Commission overseeing preparations for Rio 2016.
