Brian Havill, who has been at the ECB since 2000, will step into the role alongside his other duties.

He will assume responsibility while the retiring Collier is given "the time to conclude specific projects for both ECB and the ICC (International Cricket Council)".

Collier has been in charge for 10 years and will leave at the end of the season.

Havill is a frontrunner to replace him permanently, as is Surrey County Cricket Club chief executive Richard Gould.

The new acting chief executive joined the ECB from Pentland Group - which manages Speedo, Kickers, Ellesse and a number of other sports and fashion brands - where he was commercial director.

Havill served on the Council of the Lawn Tennis Association between 2008 and 2013 on a voluntary basis, and he is currently an independent member on the Audit Committee of the Sport & Recreational Alliance.

The departing Collier was recently interviewed by the Commonwealth Games Federation for its role as chief executive, which was given to David Grevemberg.

His exit comes after Paul Downton replaced Hugh Morris as ECB managing director last October, while Peter Moores took over from Andy Flower as England coach in April.

England and Wales will host the Cricket World Cup in 2019.
