It has earned nominations in the categories of Outstanding Special Class Programme; Outstanding Art Direction for a Variety Special; Outstanding Lighting Design/Lighting Direction for a Variety Special and Outstanding Technical Direction/Camerawork/Video Control for a Miniseries.

The nominations for the annual awards show were announced today by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in Los Angeles, California.

Sochi's Opening Ceremony at the Fisht Olympic Stadium on February 7 included a tribute to Russia's history, and the unveiling of the Olympic rings from snowflakes - though one failed to fully open.

"No single event captures the world's attention and imagination like an Olympics Opening Ceremony," said Jim Bell, executive producer of NBC Olympics.

"These nominations are a welcome recognition of a job well done by many people at NBC Olympics, and also by our wonderful partners."

NBC says the Sochi Games produced "the most dominant" primetime Winter Olympics performance on record by a broadcaster in terms of viewers.

Mike Sheehan and Joe Michaels were NBC's directors for the Opening Ceremony, with Joe Gesue and Rebecca Chatman the producers and Mark Levy the creative director.

The winners will be announced at the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards on August 25.
