Dimitrov's 6-1, 7-6, 6-2 quarterfinal victory means he is the first ever Bulgarian man to get through to the semi-finals of a Grand Slam tournament, but for Murray there was no hiding his bitter disappointment at missing out on a place in the semis for the first time since 2008.

"He was the better player from start to finish," Murray admitted.

"He played better tennis than me for the entire match.

"Right at the beginning of the match I had break points in the first game.

"But my start to the match was poor.

"I started the match badly.

"And I think that gave him confidence.

"I should have done a better job at the beginning of the match of making it tougher for him, and I didn't manage to do that.

"Also, when I got back into the second set, the end of the set, you know, that was my opportunity there.

"He'd been up in the set a break and I'd come back.

"Momentum was starting to shift a little bit.

"Couldn't quite do it."

Meanwhile, Switzerland's Roger Federer reached his ninth Wimbledon semi-final at the All England Club after beating compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka 3-6, 7-6, 6-4, 6-4.

The seven-time champion will now face Canadian Milos Raonic, who progressed after his 6-7, 6-4, 6-2, 7-6 victory over Australian wildcard Nick Kyrgios.

Also through to the semi-finals is Novak Djokovic of Serbia.

He made it 6-1, 3-6, 6-7, 6-2, 6-2 and clocked his 10th straight victory over Croatia's Marin Čilić to set up a match with Murray's successful challenger Dimitrov.

In the women's play, Canada's Eugenie Bouchard booked her place in the Wimbledon semi-finals after overcoming Germany's Angelique Kerber 6-3, 6-4.

She will now face Romanian Simona Halep, who secured a 6-4, 6-0 win over Germany's Sabine Lisicki.

"I'm excited to be in the semis," Bouchard said.

"But, you know, I'm never satisfied, so definitely want to go a step further.

"It's not every day you can walk out on Centre Court and play the semis of a slam.

"I'm going to try, give it my best, leave everything on the court and we'll see what happens."
