Fabio Hamilton da Cruz is the third worker to die at the Arena São Paulo, and the seventh across the World Cup workforce.

He was installing temporary stands at the stadium when he fell.

It was due to be completed by December, but was one of a host that failed to meet that deadline amid an ongoing race against time to get all the venues ready for this summer's tournament.

Reacting to the death, FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke wrote on Twitter: "Deeply saddened by the tragic loss of a worker at Arena São Paulo today.

"My thoughts and condolences are with his family & colleagues."

In November, two men died at the stadium when a crane collapsed.

Four men have died at the Arena Amazonia in Manaus, most recently last month when José Antonio Pita Martins was hit by a piece of iron which fell from a crane he was dismantling.

It is understood da Cruz had been hired by firm Fast Engenharia and died from his injuries in hospital several hours after this morning's accident.

The Arena São Paulo is due to host the opening game of the World Cup on June 12, when hosts Brazil take on Croatia.

The stadium is having more than 20,000 temporary seats installed for the World Cup, which will make it a 68,000-capacity venue.

It will also host three other group stage matches, a round of 16 tie, and one of the semi-finals.
