Barton Lui Pan-to, who finished fifth out of six in a qualifier for the men's 1,500 metres short-track speed race, complained that he had been let down by the Hong Kong Olympic Committee because they failed to provide him with any medical back-up.

The row led to Tsang Tak-sing, Secretary for Home Affairs, a portfolio which includes sport, questioning why the Committee had applied for Government funding for medical personnel when they put forward their plans for Sochi 2014. 

"We will pay attention as to whether the election continues to be conducted in an open, fair and transparent manner," Tsang told the South China Morning Post.

"The Government respects the Committee's autonomy and independent operation, but at the same time will supervise effective use of public money."

A total of 14 officers are due to be elected in tomorrow's election at the 63rd annual meeting.

While the 68-year-old Fok, a member of the International Olympic Committee, is not opposed there are nine candidates for the eight positions of vice-president.

Dr. F. K. Hu, Wong Wah Sang and Dr. Tony Yun Kai are all stepping down having reached the mandatory retirement age of 80 but Vivien Lau, Victor Hui, Karl Kwok, Tony Yue and Brian Stevenson are all standing for re-election.

Also standing are Hu Shao Ming Herman, nominated by the Hong Kong Cycling Association; Perry Ho Kim Fai, nominated by the Hong Kong China Rowing Association; Pui Kwan Kay, nominated by the Judo Association of Hong Kong, China; and Tong Wai Lun, William, nominated by the Hong Kong Badminton Association.

For the other posts there are only enough candidates for the available posts, including Pang Chung and Derrick Wong for the honorary secretary general and treasurer respectively.
