The European Swimming Federation LEN has named the winners of the European swimmers of the Year for 2013 ©LENDecember 2 - France's Yannick Agnel and Hungary's Katinka Hosszu have been named the European Swimming Federation's (LEN) European Swimmers of the Year.


The two swimmers won their categories by a landslide with members of the LEN Bureau, representatives of the LEN member countries, Committee members, clubs, coaches, referees, and journalists, all having a vote for the outcome of the awards.

Agnel picks-up the award for the second year running having won the award in 2012 following his success at the London Games.

During these Olympics the Frenchmen picked up two gold medals and a silver, helping his French team to victory in the 4x100 metres freestyle relay before setting France's fastest ever time in the 200m freestyle.

This year saw Agnel lead France to its first ever world title in the 4x100m freestlye event, beating the United States and Russia at the World Championships in Barcelona.

Two days later, Agnel added a second gold medal in the 200m freestyle, beating his new training American partner Conor Dwyer by more than a second.

Hosszu wins the women's award on the back of a remarkable year for the Hungarian.

At the 2013 World Championships she took gold in the 100m and 200m individual medley, as well as bronze in the 200m butterfly.

The 24-year-old also took the International Swimming Federation's (FINA) World Cup series title for the second successive year setting records in the 100m, 200m and 400m individual medleys in the process.

Germany's Thomas Lurz and Italy's Martina Grimaldi took the top awards for the Open Water category, winning with clear majorities.

Lurz wins the award for the third year running - fourth in total - after medalling in all four events at the World Championships in Barcelona.

The German took gold in both the five kilometre team event and the 25km individual race, whilst securing silver in the 10km and bronze in the 5km races.

Grimaldi won the women's category on the back of her 25km gold medal at the World Championships.

The Italian edged Germany's Angela Maurer by a tenth of a second - the smallest measurement in open water events - to take the gold medal.

The awards will be handed to the winners at the nearest, most prestigious event of their particular disciplines.
