One of the showpiece events in the sport, the Championships are held in every year except those in which there is also an Olympic Games

It will be the first Championships on Indonesian soil for almost three decades - although Jakarta has previously hosted two editions in 1980 and 1987- while it will also mark a return to Asia following a 2014 edition in Copenhagen.

Jakarta's only opposition came from Chinese city Kunshan and it is thought the victory was achieved by the narrowest of margins following a meeting of the World Badminton Federation (BWF) at its Council meeting in Athens.

Officials from each city made presentations showing how their respective bids satisfied the criteria and technical specifications to host the event, before the decision was made.

It marks an extension of the rivalry between two of the foremost nations in the sport from competitive to bidding arenas, after Indonesia and China each took two gold medals at the 2013 Championships in Guangzhou.

Poul-Erik Høyer, President of the BWF, revealed the competitive nature of the contest when admitting to have been "impressed by the technically sound and competent bids which were presented earlier today."

"There is clearly significant experience among you in hosting events and in certain instances, specifically badminton events," he added.

Jakarta's delegation was unsurprisingly delighted by the news and pledged the World Championships would match up to the BWF World Super Series event in Indonesia known for its energetic atmosphere.

"We are grateful and we are going to make it one of the best World Championships," said Bambang Roedyanto, international relations manager for the Badminton Association of Indonesia.

"It is going to be even better than the Indonesia Open and everybody knows how exciting that is."

Despite the World Championship disappointment there was something for China to smile about after another Chinese city of Dongguan was awarded the 2015 BWF Sudirman Cup mixed team event.

The 2015 BWF World Senior Championships for veteran players, meanwhile, will be held in Swedish city Helsingborg.
