Athletics Namibia has elected Alna Similo as its first woman President to replace Frankie FredericksNovember 23 - Alna Similo has today been elected as the new President of Athletics Namibia to replace Frankie Fredericks during a Congress held in Windhoek, to become the first ever woman to head the federation.

Similo had been serving as acting President following the resignation of Fredericks last month to spend more time with his family in Germany and to concentrate on his career with the International Olympic Committee.

She will hold the position for three years.

"The appointment of Alna Similo as president of Athletics Namibia is a very profound and significant one within the history of the federation given that she is the very first woman to lead this entity,"said a statement from Athletics Namibia following the Congress at the Tabitha Conference Centre.

Modestus Mwiila, Dennis Skrywer, Xenia Pieterse and Martha Emvula were elected as vice-presidents.

The position of secretary-general remains to be filled yet but Frank Slabbert, who has formerly held the position, will fill in on an interim basis.
