The USOC's chief bid and protocol officer Chris Sullivan, chief communications and public affairs officer Patrick Sandusky and Doug Arnot, who most recently served as director of Games operations for London 2012 and is an advisor to Baku 2015, have been visiting the potential bidders, according to the Associated Press.

Two sources with knowledge of the trips told AP that this small delegation has been on short, fact finding visits to cities including Boston, San Francisco, Dallas, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Washington to speak to representatives regarding their interest in hosting the Games.

The two people wished to remain anonymous because the USOC - which declined to comment - is not publicising the alleged trips.

The USOC has until next year should it wish to submit a bid, with the host for the Games being announced in 2017.

The visits come after the USOC sent letters to dozens of cities across America earlier this year in order to gauge their interest in hosting the 2024 Olympics.

More than half a dozen replied with an early "yes", and it is these cities that the USOC is said to have been visiting on short one-day trips over the autumn period.

America has not staged an Olympics since 2002 when Salt Lake City played host to the Winter Games, and a Summer Olympics has not been held in the country since the 1996 Atlanta Games.
