Approved for circulation by the Special Awards Committee, the list also recognises those who have competed at the Commonwealth Games, World Indoor Championships and World Cross Country Championships.

More than 1,000 names are currently on the list with Flack, Australia's only competitor at the inaugural Modern Olympics and won two titles over 800 and 1500 metres, occupying pride of place with the "number one" bib.

The list was launched as part of Athletics Australia's Athlete of the Year Awards in Melbourne.

Guests at the event who appeared on the list included the former Australian 100m record holder Matt Shirvington and Pam Ryan, winner of Olympic bronze and silver medals in the 80 metres hurdles at Tokyo 1964 and Mexico 1968, n addition to six Commonwealth Games titles.

Also present was Sydney 2000 400m champion Cathy Freeman, who was allocated bib 639, while athletes who competed in the 2013 editions of the athletics and cross country World Championships were also included.

The project is not yet  fully complete but, together with the Australian Paralympic Committee, Athletics Australia is nearing completion of a process to add Para-athletes to the list.

Rob Fildes, Athletics Australia President, explained the work undergone to compile the list, as well as its value.

"This list was established after the Special Awards Committee identified that it was very important to recognise Edwin Flack as our first Australian representative, with Brandon Starc the most recent induction at number 1042," he said.

"Compiled by Peter Hamilton, with the assistance of Paul Jenes, Fletcher McEwen and David Tarbotton, the list includes all athletes who have competed at the five Championships, with their first appearance in the green and gold dictating their 'bib' position on the roll of honour.

"It's a fantastic representation of the history of our sport and is a testament to the many Australians that have donned the green and gold at major championships over time."
