November 6 - Paralympic champion Xiaofei Gu of China took Asian gold and set a world record on the penultimate day in Kuala LumpurThere were two more world records at the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Powerlifting Asian Open Championships as China's Xiaofei Gu and Egypt's Hany Mohsen Mohamed Abdelhady each produced outstanding performances.


London 2012 gold medallist Gu lifted nearly three times his own bodyweight on his way to setting an Asian and world record of 231 kilogrammes in the men's under 80kg class in the Titiwangsa Stadium.

The 24-year-old, a World Championship bronze medallist at the same venue in 2010, broke the record set by Egyptian Abdelkalik Abdelkalik earlier this year by 21kg to finish ahead of Abdelkalik's compatriot and reigning world champion Metwaly Ibrahim Metwaly Mathna with Jordan's Mu'taz Aljuneidi taking bronze.

There was better news for Egypt in the men's under 88kg category as London 2012 champion Abdelhady added Asian gold to his collection and set a world record in the process with a lift of 220kg .

The 33-year-old looks to be the man to beat heading into next year's World Championships in Dubai.

China's Huichao Cai also repeated his performance from London 2012 by taking the silver medal here in Kuala Lumpur with Nigeria's Opeyemi Bambo Jegede finishing just one kilogramme behind on 199kg to secure bronze.

In the under 97kg, there was another gold for Nigeria, the fourth of the Championships, in the form of Abdulazeez Ibrahim.

He was involved in a close battle throughout with Iran's Paralympic bronze medallist Ali Sadeghzadehsalmani, eventually winning just four kilogrammes as a lift of 228kg.

Sadeghzadehsalmani's effort of 224kg set an Asian record with Mohammed Khalaf of the United Arab Emirates (taking home the bronze.
