The sculpture, Commissioned by Disley Parish Council and produced by local artists Lynn and Simon Mahoney, was officially launched during a family cycling festival in the town on the edge of the Peak District. 

Between them, Dame Sarah and Barney Storey have won a total of 14 Paralympic gold medals.

Dame Sarah is Britain's most successful ever Paralympic athlete having won a total of 22 medals, including 11 gold.

Barney Storey, meanwhile, who rides as a sighted pilot for blind or partially sighted athletes in tandem track cycling events, has won four medals in the Paralympics, including three gold.

"Given the massive achievements of Dame Sarah and Barney in the Paralympics, we felt they needed long term recognition in the village," said David Kidd, chair of Disley Parish Council.

"We commissioned a sculpture to recognise that, using a local sculpture artist and local stone to leave a lasting memory in the village.

"It all went very well despite the weather.

"We had been worried about the turnout but it was excellent, almost better than we thought."
