Ukrainian fans made "monkey noises and gestures" during the match according to the Football Against Racism Europe (FARE) representative at the match, and also made Nazi salutes and displayed neo-Nazi banners.

Fireworks were also set off at the match by home fans.

FIFA's Disciplinary Committee have banned Ukraine from hosting qualifying matches for the 2018 World Cup at the Lviv Arena as a result, and have also fined the Ukrainian Football Federation (FFU) 45,000 Swiss Francs (£31,000/$50,000/€37,000)

Ukraine need a win against Poland - the nation with whom they co-hosted the 2012 European Championships - in order to keep their hopes of automatic qualification from Group H alive when they face them on October 11 at the Metalist Stadium in Kharkiv.

England lead the race for the one automatic qualification spot for next year's World Cup in Brazil with 16 points, whilst Ukraine currently occupy the play-off position with 15 points.

However, Ukraine have Montenegro level on points just behind them and Poland just two points back in fourth with two games left to play.

England host Montenegro on the same night that Ukraine will play Poland in front of an empty stadium, and a win would be enough to secure England at least a play-off spot.
