Roman Avramenko is one of seven athletes to have tested positive for drugs at the 2013 IAAF World ChampionshipsSeptember 20 - The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has today announced that seven athletes failed doping tests at last month's World Championships in Moscow.

Of those tested positive, only Ukrainian London 2012 Olympian Roman Avramenko, who finished fifth in javelin, was a finalist.

The IAAF said the dopers "have already either been sanctioned or provisionally suspended".

Urine samples were taken from 538 athletes during competition and 132 in the run up to the event, with these now being "transferred to long-term storage facilities provided by the Lausanne laboratory for eventual re-analyses at a later stage" according to the IAAF.

In addition, 1,919 blood samples were collected from athletes between August 4 and 18 for profiling purposes in connection with the Athlete Biological Passport, which tracks athletes' blood data over time to detect any abnormalities.

"I am delighted that with the assistance of our partners the IAAF has been able to carry out such a comprehensive anti-doping testing programme in Moscow," IAAF President Lamine Diack said.

"The specialised analyses and the blood samples taken in connection with the Athlete Biological Passport emphasise the IAAF's firm commitment and resolve to use the most sophisticated methods at our disposal in the fight against cheating in sport."

The lead up to this year's World Athletics Championships was overshadowed by revelations of doping among some of the sport's biggest stars, including America's Tyson Gay and Jamaican Asafa Powell.

Meanwhile, Gay's training partner Kelly-Ann Baptiste, who was to have raced in Moscow over 100, 200 and the 4x100 metres for Trinidad and Tobago, left the Russian capital on the first day of competition after also failing a doping test.
