September 15 - Richard Hounslow and David Florence right raise their arms in celebration after receiving their World Championship gold medals in PragueDavid Florence won C2 gold with partner Richard Hounslow today at the International Canoe Federation (ICF) Slalom World Championships in Prague, to become the first British canoeist to win both C1 and C2 gold at a single Championships.

Florence becomes only the second man in history to achieve the double following Switzerland's Charles Dussuet in 1953.

Yesterday, the Scot became the first Briton to win any individual slalom event at a World Championships since 1995 when he bagged gold in the C1 event and in today's final he and Hounslow clinched C2 gold by the narrowest of margins as they finished just 0.04sec ahead of home pair Jaroslav Volf and Ondrej Stepanek.

"To come to the World Championships and win both races is just amazing," said the 31-year-old from Aberdeen.

"It's just gone so well the last couple of days and obviously a massive thanks to Rich as well.

"I'm very pleased for him to have joined me only 24 hours later as the world champion."

Florence and Hounslow may not have had it all their own way though had fellow British pair and Olympic champions Tim Baillie and Etienne Stott, who finished ahead of the duo in London, not been absent from Prague through injury.

"It was amazing watching David win [on Saturday] and to be able to call myself a world champion is fantastic," said Hounslow.

"I'm really proud of what we have both achieved.

"It was a very, very tricky course but we had a solid plan.

"It wasn't the fastest way of executing the course but it was what we felt was a safe, good risk to reward plan and it paid off for us in the end."

In the women's K1 event it was a French one-two as London 2012 champion Émilie Fer and Nouria Newman finished first and second ahead of Germany's Jasmin Schornberg.

"It is a wonderful feeling to be a world champion," said Fer.

"I think the important aspect for all the kayakers was to be strong in the beginning and in the end of the course.

"I am very happy."

Meanwhile, it was a double celebration for hosts the Czech Republic as Štěpánka Hilgertová, Kateřina Kudějová and Eva Ornstová secured top spot in the women's K1 team event ahead of Germany and Slovenia while the pairs of Ondřej Karlovský and Jakub Jáně, Jonáš Kašpar and Marek Šindler, and Jaroslav Volf and Ondřej Štěpánek won C2 men's gold ahead of Slovakia and ]Britain, which saw Florence pick up his third medal of the Championships and Hounslow his second.
