September 10 - Competitors performing in the duo dance style category in wheelchair dance sportThe Wheelchair Dance Sport World Championships will take place at Tokyo's Komazawa Olympic Park on December 7 and 8, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) announced today.

The competition will be the first major international Parasport event to take place in the Japanese capital following the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) decision to award it the hosting rights for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games last week.

More than 200 athletes from 26 nations are expected to compete across eight medal events, including duo and combi styles in Latin and standard forms, at the Komazawa Olympic Park Gymnasium, which played host to the wrestling events at Tokyo 1964, and has since staged national competitions such as table tennis, aerobics, volleyball, futsal, handball, fencing and cheerleading.

Duo style sees both dancers using wheelchairs, whereas the combi competition sees one dancer use a wheelchair with an able-bodied partner who stands up.

"We are delighted to be working with the Japanese Wheelchair Dance Sport Federation to organise these World Championships," said IPC chief executive Xavier Gonzalez.

"The venue has a long pedigree in terms of sporting heritage and will provide a great setting for wheelchair dance sport athletes to showcase their incredible talents to the world."

Although wheelchair dance sport is not yet part of the Paralympic Games programme, World Championships have been running since 1998, when another Japanese city, Nagano, hosted the inaugural event.

This year's competition will be the second time it has taken place in Tokyo following on from 2004.

The last Wheelchair Dance Sport World Championships took place in the German city of Hanover in 2010, where 120 athletes from 21 countries participated in the event.

"We are proud to host the 2013 IPC Wheelchair Dance Sport World Championships," said Organising Committee chair Kazuo Aichi.

"Wheelchair dance sport has a unique character and we look forward to welcoming the best dancers from all over the world, who will come to compete at the highest level.

"We will ensure that we put on the best possible competition and that athletes and teams will feel welcomed to this great city."
