In the 1a category Christiansen was faced with the disadvantage of being drawn second out of all of the 14 starters.

Far from affecting her chances however, this simply enabled her to lead virtually from the start as she and her horse Jeneiro 6 earned a score of 76.609 per cent, as she emphatically continued her triple gold medal-winning form from London 2012.

Defending champion and teammate Dunham placed second after scoring 75.174 per cent on board LJT Lucas Normark, while Sara Morganti of Italy was third with 74.478 per cent.

"I stayed relaxed and just let 'Rio' do his thing and I am really happy," said a delighted Christiansen afterwards.

"I don't mind where I am drawn - I can only just go and ride the best test I can do - the draw is uncontrollable, so I don't worry about it, but the wait is still agony when you go early,"

Double London 2012 champion Natasha Baker was similarly comfortable in retaining the Grade II title she won in two years ago, as she scored 72.114 per cent to finish clear of Angelika Trabert and Britta Napel of Germany, and following her victory she was quick to praise her horse Cabral

"I played safe today - I didn't over-ask for anything as I didn't want him to blow but he responded brilliantly," she said.

"I set my own personal goals for the test and I achieved them all,"

With the team standings being collated from a combination of all of the individual categories it was unsurprising that Britain took another title as they continued a record which has seen them win every World, European and Paralympic event since the first Para-Dressage competition in 1996.

The quartet scored 453.585 per cent and finished a mammoth 24 per cent clear of runners-up Germany as the host nation Denmark snatched bronze away from Italy in an exciting climax.

This trio of titles for British riders followed on from the gold medal won by Sophie Wells in her Grade IV class as well as a silver medal in the 1b event for Ricky Balshaw on his European Championship debut as he finished behind only the Paralympic champion Austrian Pepo Puch.
