Heather Mills is a step closer to qualifying for Sochi 2014 after winning a silver medal at the Winter Games in New ZealandAugust 22 - Britain's Heather Mills has moved a step closer to qualifying for next year's Winter Paralympics in Sochi after finishing second at the Winter Games in Queenstown, New Zealand.


Mills, the former wife of Sir Paul McCartney, who lost the lower half of her left leg in a collision with a police motorbike 20 years ago this month, won her silver medal in the slalom standing World Cup behind Canada's Melanie Schwartz at the event in Coronet Park.

Schwartz, ranked 16th in the world, clocked 1min 59.79sec as Mills recorded 2:09.09.

It was, nevertheless, a remarkable performance from Mills, who is ranked 28th in the world despite having only recently taken up the technical discipline of slalom having joined the British Development Team in 2010.

"Skiing in New Zealand has been an amazing experience, and to top it off by leaving with silver in slalom is a dream come true," said Mills, a former model.

"Achieving this at the age of 45 with only a few seasons of learning shows anything is possible, truly anything."
