Powell was relieved of her duties by the FA after 15 years in charge as she oversaw the worst performance at a European Championships for twelve years this summer, where England mustered just one point from their three games despite going in as one of the favourites to lift the trophy after reaching the final in 2009.

Hills, also England women's under-23 coach, will take the senior team helm as England host two nations on the south coast next month on the road to Canada 2015, beginning with Belarus at Bournemouth's Dean Court on September 21 as they look to secure qualification for their third consecutive World Cup.

England smashed 10 past Belarus in the two fixtures they played against them in the qualifying stages for Euro 2009, kicking off with a 4-0 win at Walsall's Banks's Stadium, before romping home to a 6-1 win in the return fixture.

Five days' later, Turkey will be welcomed to Portsmouth's Fratton Park in another game where the home side will be expected to get a positive result.

The two sides went head-to-head in the last World Cup qualification group where England took all six points with comfortable 3-0 wins at home and away.

Joining England in their qualification group are neighbours Wales along with Montenegro and Ukraine.
