July 24 - us team sledge hockey 2014USA Hockey has nominated its initial 18-player roster for the sledge hockey team for Sochi 2014 where it will defend the title it won at the Vancouver 2010 Paralympics.

Nine of the athletes chosen were part of the US team that went through the whole sled hockey tournament at Vancouver 2010 without conceding a single goal before defeating Japan 2-0 in the gold medal match to claim its second-ever sled hockey Paralympic title, following victory on home soil at Salt Lake City in 2002.

Steve Cash, Taylor Chace, Nikko Landeros, Josh Pauls, Andy Yohe, Taylor Lipsett, Adam Page, Alexi Salamone and Greg Shaw will be hoping to make it two-in-a-row at the Games in Russia, where the Games are due to take place between March 7 and 16.

The squad, which is subject to approval of the United States Olympic Committee (USOC), will be trimmed to 17 players by January 1, 2014 to comply with the Paralympic Games roster limit.

"We're incredibly pleased with the roster we have built for the 2014 Paralympic Games," said Dan Brennan, general manager of the US Paralympic sledge hockey team.

"The talent pool in the US has expanded rapidly in recent years, which made the selection of players very difficult."

In all, 67 players took part in a two-day trial earlier this month, and joining the nine Vancouver 2010 veterans will be Tyler Carron, Declan Farmer, Jen Lee, Dan McCoy, Kevin McKee, Rico Roman, Paul Schuss and Josh Sweeney, all  part of the US team that claimed silver at this year's International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Sledge Hockey World Championships in South Korea, losing out to North American neighbours Canada 1-0 in the final.

Brody Royal, 15, is the other member of the 18-man squad chosen, as he makes his debut on the US team.

"I am excited about the players we have selected," said head coach Jeff Sauer.

"We have a great mix of Paralympics veterans as well as some younger players who are ready to take the next step internationally."
