The Evian Resort Golf Club, on the French shore of Lake Geneva, is due to host the Evian Championship, the fifth women's golf Major, in September.

The course's big moment comes two years after the Championship was awarded Major status by the international ruling bodies of women's golf.

It joins the Kraft Nabisco Championship, the LPGA Championship, the US Women's Open and the Women's British Open in being recognised in this way.

The timetabling of the Evian Championship, at the end of the season, means that the world's leading players will be crowned in Evian following the event.


While continental Europe has staged the Ryder Cup, played at Valderrama in Spain in 1997, and will do so again - in France - in 2018, it has not hosted a men's Major.

Franck Riboud, chairman of both Danone, the French foods group whose brands include Evian water, and the Evian Championship, described the challenge faced by contractors involved in the project as "little less than pharaonic".

International architects EGD - represented by South African Dave Sampson and Jeremy Slessor from the UK, who were designers of the Celtic Manor course that hosted the 2010 Ryder Cup - were appointed to design Evian's Major course.

The project was also overseen by Steve Smyers, a United States architect and Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) consultant.

The 2013 Evian Championship are due take place between September 12 and 15.
