This is the first time that Brookes (pictured), who is also chair of British Deaf Tennis, will lead the British team.

The 47-year-old from Reigate, has competed in two Deaflympics, and won two silvers in badminton, but has also represented Britain at tennis during a career that spanned from the 1985 Games in Los Angeles to Rome in 2001.

Fiona's daughter Bethany Brookes will follow in her mother's footsteps and be part of the Team GB squad for Sofia, hoping to win medals in tennis.

"It is a real honour to be taking on this role, and I was delighted to be asked," said Fiona Brookes.

"Having been involved mainly on the tennis scene for many years, it will be interesting to work with the other sports, and ensure that the whole of Team GB is given every opportunity to do its utmost and bring those medals home."

Britain finished 26th in the medal table in Taipei 2009 and hope to improve on that placing in Sofia with a team of 48 competitors challenging for top honours.

"The squad announcement marks a major stage in our planning," said Gordon Hay, who has been in charge of preparations.

"We know that athletes and their teams have worked extremely hard, both in their training and in helping us raise funds for the trip to Sofia.

"Preparations will continue to ensure that we give our athletes the best possible opportunity to succeed and to bring back medals.

"There is now just one month until we leave for the Games.

"I would urge all supporters to make one final push for donations as even a small amount can help us."
