The 43-year-old from Wales (pictured top) secured a maiden C1 road race victory over fellow London 2012 gold medallist Michael Teuber of Germany – who he had finished 58 seconds behind in the the time trial race – in the first major competition since last year's Games.

More success came for British Paralympians in Italy as three-time gold medallist David Stone beat Hans-Peter Durst in the T2 time trial before the German took revenge in the road-race, leaving Stone with silver and Italian Giorgio Farroni with bronze.

Durst was gracious and thanked the pair for helping him to the victory.

"I would like to thank them both for helping me," he said after the race.

"I usually like to work more but I was suffering from hay fever."
