Pat Fiacco head and shouldersMay 27 - Pat Fiacco has been re-elected President of the Canadian Boxing Association (CBA) for a second four-year term after standing unopposed for the position at the Annual General Meeting in Regina.

Fiacco, the Mayor of Regina from 2002 to 2012, was re-elected by acclimation after the CBA expressed their full confidence in his leadership.

"I feel very pleased on how the AGM was conducted and it's very clear that the executive is happy with Pat's leadership," said CBA vice-president Ryan Savage.

"I credit Pat for doing a fantastic job and going in the right direction."

Under Fiacco, the CBA have made several advances, notably securing the prestigious 2014 International Boxing Association (AIBA) Women's World Championships, which will be staged in Edmonton.

Fiacco also oversaw a strong London 2012 Olympics for his country where men's welterweight Custio Clayton became the first Canadian to win a boxing bout at the Games in eight years when he beat Mexico's Oscar Molina in the opening round.

He then beat Australian Cameron Hammond in the last 16 but just missed out on a medal as he was narrowly beaten by Britain's Fred Evans in the quarter-finals by split-decision.

Fiacco's re-election has been welcomed by AIBA President C K Wu.

"Without your continuous support as the leader of the Canadian Boxing Association, I am sure that your boxers' enthusiasm would crumble", said Wu in his congratulatory letter to Fiacco.

"Your passion for boxing is without any doubt enhancing their performance and increasing their wish to represent their country in the most important sporting events."
