Hunt stepped down in February this year having served as Chef de Mission for Team GB at the London 2012 Olympics.

Under Hunt, Team GB secured 65 medals, 29 of which were gold, to finish third in the medals table in what was their best performance in over a century.

Upon his departure from the BOA, Hunt stated his desire to "move on to another leadership role with breadth and profile similar to the responsibilities I've fulfilled (at the BOA) since 2008."

In his new special advisor role, Hunt will assist the Commonwealth Games England Board in its planning for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

"I am delighted and honoured to be appointed as a special advisor to the Board of Commonwealth Games England," said Hunt.

"Glasgow 2014 is now less than 15 months away and it is a superb opportunity for England's athletes to excel at another 'home' Games in the UK.

"I look forward to working with the Board and bringing my experience of leading Team GB at the London 2012 Olympics, whilst ensuring England's athletes have the best chance of achieving success and truly making this nation proud."

Hunt is set to take up his new role with immediate effect and Commonwealth Games England chairman Sir Andrew Foster feels his expertise will provide huge benefit to the Board.

"I am very pleased to welcome Andy to our organisation and the Board and I are looking forward to utilising his games delivery knowledge, as we focus on providing the best possible support for our athletes," said Sir Andrew,

"London 2012 highlighted just how important a 'one team' approach is, and we will use Andy's experience to develop a similar philosophy of togetherness for Glasgow 2014."
