sportshub13eApril 3 - Vietnam will co-host the group stages of the Suzuki Cup, South East Asia's premier national team tournament, along with defending champions Singapore, in 2014, it has been announced.

The Association of South Eastern Nations Football Federation (AFF) made the announcement during a meeting in Kuantan, Malaysia, today.

The biennial Suzuki Cup features eight teams, who are split into two groups of four, with the top two teams from either group progressing to home-and-away semi-finals and finals to determine the winners.

Singapore are expected to host matches at the new 60,000-capacity national stadium (pictured top), which is currently under-construction as part of the city-state's £700 million ($1 billion/€800 million) Sports Hub complex.

Vietnam will host matches at the 40,000-capacity My Dinh National Stadium in Hanoi - the stadium in which they last won the cup in 2008 - which is located at the heart of Vietnam's National Sports Complex.

AFF Council member Abdullah Ahmad Shah claimed that he felt it was the "right time" to play group stage matches in Singapore after not hosting it since 2007.

"After all, it has been quite a while since they hosted it." he said.

"With a new stadium, the participating teams would be looking forward to play at a spanking new venue,"

The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) said: "One of the key targets spelt out in the FAS Strategic Plan is to organise more high-profile competitions and bring quality football action to our fans."

It will be the tenth time the tournament has been held since it started in 1996, as the successor to the the successor to the Tiger Cup and ASEAN (Association of South Eastern Nations) Football Championship, when Thailand beat Malaysia 1-0 in the final in Singapore.

The 2012 qualifying tournament was held in Malaysia and Thailand before the two-legged final saw Singapore triumph 3-2 on aggregate over Thailand.

Dates for the 2014 event are still to be decided.
