GoalControl fought off competition from the likes of fellow German system GoalRef and the Sony-owned HawkEye system, both of which were used when GLT made its first tournament appearance at the 2012 FIFA Club World Cup in Japan.

GoalControl, which became the fourth GLT system to gain a licence from FIFA last month, will provide goal-line technology for the 2013 Confederations Cup, which will take place in Brazil between June 15 and June 30 this year.

The GoalControl system features 14 high-speed cameras aimed at both goals that automatically capture the position of the ball in three dimensions as it approaches the goal-line.

The system then sends an encrypted signal to the referee's wristwatch in under one second when the ball crosses the line.

The technology does not require any additional equipment, and works with standard goalposts and footballs.

This decision is undoubtedly a massive boost for the system, which will also be in the running to be used at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, against the likes of GoalRef, Hawkeye and Cairos.

FIFA said: "While all four companies had previously met the stringent technical requirements of the FIFA quality programme, the final decision was based on criteria relating more specifically to the tournaments in Brazil, including the company's ability to adapt to local conditions and the compatibility of each GLT system in relation to FIFA match operations.

"The respective bids were also judged on cost and project management factors such as staffing and time schedules for installation.

"The use of GoalControl-4D in Brazil is subject to a final installation test at each stadium where the system will be installed."
