154465957March 26 - Glasgow's status as the UK's conference capital has been reaffirmed after it was named as the country's best conference city in a poll by Meetings & Incentive Travel (M&IT) for the seventh time, providing another timely boost for the Scottish city as the bidding race to host the 2018 Youth Olympic Games heats up.

Glasgow City Marketing Bureau (GCMB) had to outdo strong competition from the likes of London and Partners, Liverpool Convention Bureau, Marketing Manchester and VisitScotland to top the poll, which is voted for by more than 3,000 meetings industry professionals.

Conventions offer a huge income for Scotland's biggest city, and are worth around £975 million ($1.5 billion/€1.15 billion) to the city's economy, generating over three million conference delegate hotel room bookings, with one in five hotel beds sold in the city being booked by conference delegates.

Glasgow 2018 did director Paul Bush said: "To win a prestigious M&IT Award for a seventh time is a fantastic achievement and reflects the city's position as a leading destination for conferences and events.

"This award, which is recognised as the industry's 'gold standard', is testimony to the excellent partnership working that exists between the different partners across the city."

"That partnership approach is also at the very heart of our Bid to bring the 2018 Youth Olympic Games to the city.

"Glasgow is continuing to push ahead with plans to bring the very best conferences and events to the city and the Youth Olympic Games falls into that category.

"We want to build on the success of our partners including GCMB and show the world we are the perfect destination."

Glasgow is in the race against Argentinean capital Buenos Aires and the Colombian city of Medellin to host the 2018 Youth Olympic Games, with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) set to elect the host city in Lausanne on July 4.
