The search for up to 15,000 volunteers for Glasgow 2014 is currently underway with the application deadline which is set to close at 23.59 on Thursday (February 28).

Three quarters of the United Kingdom's top 100 companies already encourage employee volunteering programmes and Glasgow 2014 are now calling on Scotland's businesses and organisations to consider the experience the Commonwealth Games offers to the thousands of individuals who will make up the nation's biggest ever peacetime volunteer force.

"Glasgow 2014 will provide a huge economic, sporting and social legacy for Scotland, and businesses across the country can both contribute to and benefit from this engagement opportunity," said Glasgow 2014 chief executive David Grevemberg.

"One of the greatest resources many companies have to offer is to share the time and skills of its workforce.

"We want employers – where possible - to embrace the opportunities volunteering offers and encourage staff to sign up."


Scottish Council for Development and Industry chief executive Professor Lesley Sawers has also called for Scottish business and civic leaders to consider the Glasgow 2014 volunteer programme.

"Glasgow 2014 is a great opportunity for individuals in civic and business Scotland to use their skills as part of a fantastic moment, and play a role in representing Glasgow and Scotland positively on the global stage," said Sawers.

The University of Glasgow has already committed to giving its staff an additional four days of paid leave to enable them to volunteer at Glasgow 2014.

"The Commonwealth Games will be a fabulous showcase for sport, for the city of Glasgow and for Scotland," said the University of Glasgow Principal and Vice-Chancellor Professor Anton Muscatelli

"We are determined to do all that we can to enable University of Glasgow staff to enjoy the Games and, if they wish, to take an active part as volunteers.

"That is why we are offering up to an additional four days of paid leave to colleagues who are successful in applying to be volunteers."

Applicants need to be 16 or older to apply, be eligible to work in the United Kingdom and must be available for at least eight days during the Games themselves between July 23 and August 3 in 2014 as well as to come to Glasgow for an interview, training and uniform collection ahead of the Games.
