glas volunteerDecember 18 - More than 40,000 people from every corner of the United Kingdom have now registered their interest in being a volunteer at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.


Glasgow 2014 is seeking to recruit up to 15,000 volunteers to help deliver the Commonwealth Games and it appears that there will be tough competition for places given that so many have already registered an early interest online ahead of applications officially opening in mid-January 2013.

Scotland is currently leading the way as approximately 25,000 potential volunteers hail from the Commonwealth Games host nation.

In terms of city interest, the list is unsurprisingly topped by Glasgow which is followed by Edinburgh, Paisley, Motherwell, Kilmarnock and Falkirk.

There have been high levels of interest away from the central belt in Aberdeen, Kirkcaldy and Inverness.

But while the majority of registrations so far are from Scotland, the legacy of the London 2012 Games Maker volunteers is still evident in the figures as over a third of those to register are from England.

London is the highest ranking English city in terms of the numbers registering their interest in volunteering, closely followed by Birmingham and Newcastle.

The volunteering message has also reached across Wales and Northern Ireland with people in both countries having registered their interest.

"While we launched our campaign with the message that we were seeking Scotland's friendliest faces, it was always our intention to attract people from across the United Kingdom," said the Glasgow 2014 head of Games workforce Valerie Mitchell (pictured top).

"We are delighted that the awareness of the many opportunities to volunteer at the Games has clearly extended well beyond Scotland and right across Britain.

"We have always emphasised that we cannot provide travel or accommodation expenses so it shows the level of commitment and interest in volunteering.

"That the core of our registrations were from Scotland is also encouraging as it shows a desire of the people in this country to put on a show and help deliver a successful Games."

The interest in Glasgow 2014 from an English audience also extends to ticketing with the latest research showing a rise of around 150 per cent south of the border in those indicating a wish to buy a ticket for the Commonwealth Games.
