The move comes after Glasgow City Council approved the £3.67 million ($5.93 million/€4.51 million) plan to connect a purpose-built Energy Centre to the venues and support a long-term maintenance and operating contract.

The Energy Centre has a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) engine, three boilers and a thermal store.

The 590-square-metre building houses also has the capacity for a further CHP engine, boiler and thermal store to accommodate future expansion of the Athletes' Village after the Commonwealth Games.

It will provide hot water to the Emirates Arena and Athletes' Village, which will be home to more than 4,500 athletes and officials during the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

After the Commonwealth Games, the Athletes' Village will be reconfigured into accommodation units and become housing, with some of the homes being used as a care home for the elderly.

Work has finished on the Energy Centre, which will see a reduction in carbon emissions in the Athletes' Village of about 60 per cent.
