The 66-year-old Negre had been first elected President in Los Angeles four years ago when he defeated Dutchwoman Els van Breda Vriesman, who had held the post since 2001.

"I thank all of the countries and delegates for putting their faith in me for another term." said Negre, who played for Spain in the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City.

"We have accomplished a lot in the last four years, but there is still work to be done and many new exciting projects to tackle."

A new ruling Executive Board was also chosen with five members elected, four of them for the first time.

They included England's Sue Catton, a former board member of England Hockey, who was the competitions manager for hockey and wheelchair rugby at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

She was joined by Canada's Mary Cicinelli and Argentina's Sandra Isola.

As the third-place vote getter, Isola will serve a two-year term instead of the standard four-year term to satisfy the FIH Statutes at the next Congress.

The trio replace Wales' Anne Ellis and Canada's Sue Neill, who are retiring from the Board in addition to Australia's Renita Gerard who was not re-elected.

Following the voting for the female board members, there were two remaining places to be determined.

After one round of voting, those final two places went to standing Executive Board member Holland's Jan Albers and Malaysia's Prince Abdullah Shah with Germany's Stephan Abel failing to be re-elected.
