FijiOctober 15 - Fiji defeated New Zealand 32-14 in the final of the 2012 Gold Coast Sevens to successfully defend the title they won last year and take an early lead in the HSBC Sevens World Series 2012/13.

It was two of Fiji's sevens debutantes who stole the show in the final at Skilled Park with Ratu Raitini scoring an impressive hat-trick and Player of the Tournament Joji Raqamate crossing twice.

"I told the boys to work hard so we can achieve our goal," said Fiji captain Levani Botia.

"We know it's a good start for us and that's what we came here for.

"We wanted to defend the trophy and bring the glory back to Fiji."

The victory means Fiji collect 22 Series points to sit top of the standings ahead of New Zealand who are on 19 points.

Meanwhile, South Africa sit third on 17 points after beating an impressive Kenya in the third place play-off.

Earlier in the competition, Argentina beat France 14-7 to win the Plate while Spain surprisingly edged and injury-hit England to lift the Bowl.

Elsewhere, Scotland took the Shield as the teams now pack up and head to Dubai for the second round of the HSBC Sevens World Series.

The Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens will take place from November 30 to December 1, while the draw for the event was made in the Gold Coast.

Pool A sees Fiji grouped with Kenya, Spain and Scotland while Pool B sees New Zealand, Argentina, Wales and Russia drawn together.

Pool C sees South Africa grouped with Samoa, England and Portugal while the Pool D pits France, Australia, Canada and the USA together.
