Although men's boxing has appeared at the Asian Games since 1954, women's boxing was only introduced to the competition in Guangzhou in 2010.

But following a successful appearance in Guangzhou and then a hugely popular debut outing at the London 2012 Olympics, the sport will appear at the Asian Games again in Incheon.

The move was confirmed following a meeting at the Incheon Tower between ASBC executive director Aziz Kozhambetov, Incheon 2014 President Kim Young Soo and International Boxing Association (AIBA) executive director Ho Kim.

"Women boxers will once again be able to compete in the three Olympic weight classes [flyweight, lightweight and middleweight] at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games following the great success of the previous edition in Guangzhou, China," said an AIBA statement.

"Asia has always been one of the leading continents when it comes to women's boxing and it aims to maintain that position up until the Rio 2016 Olympic Games."

The move is another big boost for the sport after it was confirmed last week that women's boxing would appear at the Commonwealth Games for the first time ever at Glasgow 2014, while it made its Pan American Games debut in Guadalajara last year.

Nevertheless, it was at the London 2012 Olympics where the sport made its biggest impact, with British flyweight Nicola Adams, Irish lightweight Katie Taylor and American middleweight Claressa Shields winning the first Olympic women's boxing gold medals.

Following the success of London 2012, AIBA President C K Wu promised to fight to get more women's weight categories included for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games but only the three current Olympic weight categories will appear at Incheon 2014.

The Incheon 2014 Asian Games will take place from September 19 to October 4 with the event set to be one of the largest sporting events ever staged in South Korea.
