Chautala had served three consecutive terms as IBF President but the Indian Sports Ministry ruled that all the incumbent office-bearers must be replaced in their roles.

Therefore, in elections overseen by Justice M S Liberhan and former judge D K Sharma, the 29-year-old Matoria was elected new President.

"My name was unanimously elected by the house and having being an athlete myself, I plan to do all that I can to take Indian boxing higher," said Matoria, who at 26 had become the youngest person elected as a member of India's Legislative Assembly.

"I have been associated with amateur boxing for a long time and have even accompanied the team to the 2007 World Championships in Chicago.

"Boxing is a sport close to my heart and I will try to ensure that the talent in villages gets exposure at the national level."

Although Chautala was nominated to the post of chairman, the Sports Ministry are not likely to object because it is a nominated position and therefore he has not violated any rules.

Chautala will be the IBF representative at the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) elections in November.

The meeting also saw Rajesh Bhandari elected as the new secretary general, with former incumbent Muralidharan Raja becoming vice-president.

The new regime at the IBF will now be faced with the task of transforming the fortunes of the team after a poor showing at London 2012 Olympics.

Despite going into the Games in good form, having won three gold medals and four bronze medals at the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games, India only picked up one Olympic bronze medal in the sport at London 2012 with 29-year-old female flyweight Mary Kom claiming third spot on the podium after losing to Britain's Nicola Adams in the semi-final atExCeL.

Their first step on the road to recovery will come in the International Boxing Association (AIBA) competition World Series of Boxing (WSB), where their franchise India Fighters will be competing.
