Storey, the double Beijing 2008 Paralympic cycling champion, claimed her win in the C5 500 metres time trial while Aileen McGlynn (pictured below right), piloted by Helen Scott, took an impressive silver in the women's B/Vi 3km pursuit.

Storey's success came after the 34-year-old from Manchester rode her two laps brilliantly to post a new British record and a personal best with a time of 37.371sec.

Storey admitted that she was delighted to secure victory, particularly as she held off China's Ju Fang Zhou, who took silver.

"This is the event, alongside the road race, that I get a little nervous," said Storey.

"You never know what's going to happen when the world record holder [Ju Fang Zhou] is in the event.

"I've just been working hard on getting more explosive, so it was good to get a PB as it shows I'm notching away towards the world record.

"Today I was just trying to concentrate on getting out of the gate cleanly, getting the first half snappy and then using my strength in the second lap and a half to drive as fast as I could.

"It all came together for me and I'm really chuffed."


Meanwhile McGlynn and Scott took silver as they made it to the final, but were beaten by Ireland's Catherine Walsh and Francine Meehan.

The Bristish duo started the race better than their opposition, but lost their advantage in consecutive laps finishing behind the Irish pair.

"For a few seconds in that final I thought, we can have this, but I think we got it all out in the first ride," said Scott.

"We went off well trying to hold the same splits, but we were a little slower each time."

New Zealand's Phillipa Gray and Laura Thompson secured the third podium spot as they defeated the second British tandem pairing of Lora Turnham, piloted by Fiona Duncan, in a bronze medal ride off.

The victory in the event was a huge boost for Ireland, however, as Walsh and Meehan set a new Irish record of 3min 37.392sec in the morning heats before defeating McGlynn and Scott in the final.

The result meant that Ireland matched Britain's achievement – winning a gold and a silver on day one of the event – as Ireland's male tandem pairing of James Brown and pilot Damien Shaw took second place behind the Australian duo of Bryce Lindores and Scott McPhee.

The four-day competition is the final qualifying event for the Paralympic Games.

The British and Irish medallists now look set to be selected to compete at the Games in 200 day's time.
